Google listened to users and proposed updates to Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Chat, Google Docs (among others). You will be able to manage overdue tasks, improve your searches and collaborate better with your team.
What are the updates?
Hangouts Classic to be upgraded to Google Chat
As of March 22, 2022.
Google will move forward to the final phase of migration from the classic version of Hangouts to Google Chat announced earlier for Google Workspace customers.
What will happen? The setting will be changed to "Chat Preferred" for customers who have not already done so, so that Google Chat will be the default application. When users visit the classic version of Hangouts in Gmail from the Web or via mobile apps, they will be taken to Chat.
Change cannot be refused.
Additional detailsÂ
- Vault users: Messages sent in the classic version of Hangouts will continue to be retained and preserved according to the policies set for Chat. In addition, they will be searchable and exportable with Gmail search in Vault. Messages sent in Chat are subject to the retention and retention rules you set for Chat; they can be searched and exported with Chat search in Vault.
Functionality to manage overdue tasks in Google Calendar
If you have unfinished tasks that have fallen due in the last 30 days, you will see an entry for the whole day that will show you the number of tasks for that period that are still pending.
If you click on that entry, you will see the to-do list and you can edit them or mark them as complete directly from there. This helps with better time management.
New Smart Canvas features in Google Docs
Functionalities that will create a more interactive, intelligent and flexible experience.
- Add a summary to a document to give readers an overview of the content. In some editions of Google Workspace, summary suggestions will even appear automatically.
- Create files without pages in Documents, to facilitate collaboration on them. For example, if they have wide tables or large images.

Improvements in Google Drive search
Google Drive search chips help better define search results, helping you find important files faster.
- File type (e.g. Google document, PDF or image)
- Persons
- Location (e.g., a shared drive or a specific folder)
- Document last modified File titles only
- Shared labels
- Tasks
Alert users about suspicious files
More protections against abusive content.
When opening a potentially suspicious or dangerous file in Google Drive, a warning banner will be displayed to protect the user and your organization against malware, phishing and ransomware. These warnings are already available in Google Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations and Drawings.
AvailabilityÂ
- The features are available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business edition customers.
